As the repository for learning materials and the central point for interaction between students, the Moodle platform at the UK's Open University (UKOU) is the key learning system for 200,000 distance learners. This presentation shows how Moodle is being used to encourage innovation in teaching and learning at the UKOU, demonstrates how its use is extending across the University and outlines some of the new developments being made to improve aspects of the platform such as personalization, mobile access and user-generated content.

Niall Sclater is Director of Learning Innovation at UKOU, where he promotes the use and development of e-learning by staff and students. He has also worked as director of the Open University's virtual learning environment programme, which developed a learning management system based on Moodle. Actively involved in the research, development and management of e-learning in higher education since 1992, Sclater has published widely on many aspects of the subject and his blog and list of publications can be consulted at www.sclater.com.
